I remember when I was growing up my pops always told me, “Son, if you find three people in your life that you can call a true friend, you are truly fortunate.” I must say that for the first 29 years of my life I didn’t have one true friend. I know this may sound crazy, but I didn’t find one until I went to prison. I found God while in prison and I walked with Him for the last 2.5 years of my sentence. I have been out for 3.5 years and I am still walking strong with the One True Living God. I have been so blessed and I am doing far greater than I deserve.
One day the Lord revealed this Scripture to me about friends. John 15:13 which says; “Greater love has no one than this, than to lay down one’s life for his friends.” My question is, “Other than Jesus Christ, how many people do you know that will do this for you?” Myself, I know of a couple, and I would do the same for them. I can only say this because of where my journey has taken me. I just want to say thank you God, and I want to say thank you David, Corey, and Jeff. Much love and respect brothers.
Now I would like to share this poem with you that my brother David wrote and gave to me during great adversity. I hope you enjoy it.
Friends are something so rare, when true…
Something others swear they have till their faces turn blue…
But when it’s all said and done,
When it isn’t no more fun…
That’s when you can tell who’s a friend,
By whether they stay or run…
Now that my time has come, someone’s chosen to stay,
To see me thru to brighter days…
That someone is a friend, rare and true,
A guardian angel, a gift from heaven,
And that someone is you…
I know this to be absolutely true without doubt. I don’t know how many times I sat across from David in the chow hall etc., watching his back as he was watching mine. I know if he went to segregation, along with a couple of others, I was going as well. We were like a little family of brothers that did what we had to do to survive while serving time on the devil’s front porch.
Father I thank you for your Son Jesus Christ who shed His blood on the cross for all our sins. I enter you throne room with thanks giving in my heart, a repentant heart, and asking for your forgiveness. Father, I pray that the words you have given me this day touches those who need your touch. Thank you God. I pray that you continue to protect us, provide for us, and shower us with your blessings from above. I pray in the name of your wonderful Son Jesus Christ, Amen!
