It is imperative to recognize the theme of this letter from the Apostle Paul. What was the purpose of the theme? To expound on the Unity in the Body of the church. Paul had brought a message to the Ephesians previously, a revelation from God. He said, “Instead, we will hold to the to the truth in love, becoming more and more in every way like Christ, who is the head of his body, the church. Under his direction, the whole body is fitted together perfectly. As each part does its own special work, it helps the other parts grow, so that the whole body is healthy; seeking God’s face, praying, participating in fellowship, strengthened by the Spirit, and growing in faith.
Therefore, as children of the most high God we are gifted in ways that make us necessary to others, thus, other have gifts that are necessary to us. Many have special gifts for teaching about God, others caring for people who are hurting. It is no secret that we all have been blessed with individual gifts that are used to support the emotional and spiritual growth of those around us to exalt the name of Jesus while glorifying God.What I am writing today involves the Epistle that Apostle Paul wrote to the Ephesians. Allow me to paint a picture of the Ephesian believers. They were a group of believers who were rich beyond measure in Jesus Christ, yet they chose to live as beggars. Why do they remain in Spiritual poverty? Simply because they were ignorant of their true wealth in the Lord. Spiritual gifts see; 1 Corinthians 12:8-11 and 1 Corinthians 14:1-25.
This is why we must know that God has a purpose for each of us, this is why we must strive to know Him better through prayer and meditation on His Word. If you have no idea what your gift is, just ask God for He is just and faithful, He will reveal your gift and show you how to use them to glorify Him, and help all around you trusting that said gift will draw them closer to the One True Living God.
No Christian has to live as a spiritual beggar when God gives the opportunity to embrace His riches beyond their imagination. To move from poverty to prosperity; one must meditate on God’s word, listen to God’s word, determine where they are standing, and then begin living by faith. There is no other way to accomplish true freedom a part from God. John 8:32 says; If ye shall know the truth, the truth shall set you free. While John 8:36 says; If the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed. These two Scriptures make reference to the “New Man”.
The letter was penned by the Apostle Paul from prison in Rome, its purpose covered the spiritual bounty of the Christian and the unity of the church in Jesus Christ. However, it was written to the Ephesians, then became a blessing to all the churches in Asia. That is the Divine Providence of God at work. The Hand of God is working in the shadows at all times, infinitely, many just don’t realize it.
I am going to illustrate what it means to put on the “New Man” as Paul was speaking of in Ephesians chapter four. Let’s start out by looking at the context of the Scripture to get an accurate meaning of said Scriptures. Therefore the text I will be covering is Ephesians 4:17-32. To be accurate we need to look at Scripture before and after said Scripture to remain in context.
Ephesians 4:17-20 Paul says; This I say, therefore, and testify in the Lord, that you should no longer walk as the rest of the Gentiles walk, in the futility of their mind, having their understanding darkened, being alienated from the life of God, because of the ignorance that is in them, because of the blindness of their heart; who, being past feeling, have given themselves over to lewdness, to work all uncleanness with greediness. But you have not so learned Christ.
What is Paul saying here? He is confronting the Ephesians about their ungodly life-style which they should turn away from. If you repent, turn away at this time you will no longer be confused; hard-hearted, filled with darkness from the evil one, full of immorality and greed which motivates you to cling to your own selfish-desires which lead to death. Ask the Lord God to deliver you from the bondage you are suffering from and live as children of the light. You have been informed of Christ, consider yourself warned.
Let’s look at Ephesians 4:20-24 which says; But you have not so learned Christ. Paul is saying, until we accept Jesus Christ as our personal Lord and Savior we will remain in the abyss of darkness which motivates selfish desires that will eventually overcome, yet, devour our mind. Chasing after the world to fill a void is extremely dangerous, not only to you, but to everyone around you. The Word of God says; sin leads to death, which is absolute truth. Satan is not your friend, He is determined to keep you in shackles and chains, Spiritual bondage for He came to steal, kill, and destroy. On the other hand, there must be a spiritual renewal of our mind, thoughts, and attitudes. We must display a new nature because you are a new creation, created in God’s likeness: righteous, holy, and true.
Ephesians 4:21-22; Paul makes reference to hearing Jesus and knowing He is the TRUTH, therefore repenting of sin while rebuking the old man who grows, thrives, and feeds on corruptness, all sorts of lust, and evil behavior which continues to grow according to deceitful deception. He is saying that if we do not become completely reliant on Jesus Christ by exercising our faith in God we will remain a slave to our own evil thought, plan, and desires.
Ephesians 4:23-24 says; and be renewed in the Spirit of your mind, and that you put on the new man who was created according to God, in true righteousness and holiness. Paul is saying allow your mind to become open and receptive of God’s Word, the truth. When we make the choice of becoming vulnerable to the unknown, God has the opportunity to begin His great and mighty work through us. The ever so subtle transformation begins to blossom that all may see to glorify God, yet draw others closer by the power of the Holy Spirit. The “NEW MAN“, refers to God’s creation, created according to God, whom He created in true righteousness, holiness, His likeness, and truth.
The “New Man” has accepted Jesus Christ as personal Lord and Savior only by God’s Amazing Grace through faith, confessed their sin, manifested repentance to God, has become Baptized in the name of the Father, Son, and the Holy Spirit, and believes that Jesus Christ rose again on the third day. Also, he/she will begin to live their life for God, the love of Jesus Christ by the power of the Holy Spirit. For one has stepped from the abyss of darkness rebuking Satan, by faith, they step over the thresh-hold into the light. In other words, Jesus Christ has accepted the invitation to live in one’s heart for the glory of God and to serve others in love. They will take on a new character as time goes by; you can find the character I am speaking of in Galatians 5:22. They will no longer represent their earthly self, they will be representing our Father in heaven filled with fire and desire to serve our Lord Jesus Christ King of all Kings.
Ephesians 4:25-32 says; Therefore, putting away lying, “Let each one of you speak truth with his neighbor,” for we are members of one another. “Be angry, and do not sin”, do not let the sun go down on your wrath, nor give place to the devil. Let him who stole steal no longer, but rather let him labor, working with his hands what is good, that he may have something to give him who has need. Let no corrupt word proceed out of your mouth, but what is good for necessary edification, that it may impart grace to the hearers. And do not grieve the HOLY SPIRIT of GOD, by whom you were sealed for the day of redemption. Let all bitterness, wrath, anger, clamor, and evil speaking be put away from you, with all malice. And be kind to one another, tender-hearted, forgiving one another, even as God in Christ forgave you.
Paul was diligent when it came to the children of Ephesus, he lived with them for approximately two-years, his ministry had a miraculous impact on the city. However, on a regular basis Paul had to remind the people not to fall into the trap of the non Christians. You could say he had to go back to the beginning with them, he did this for the love and glory of God alone. He explained to them that their behavior brings sorrow to the Holy Spirit and breaks God’s heart.
He expounds on his message informing the people that they are grieving the Holy Spirit due to their behavior which tarnishes God’s good name. He continues on by saying that God is a forgiving God of all sin, He loves us and desires to reward us, bless us, and see great fruit produced in and through us for the benefit of the kingdom of God, His glory, and other people, not to discipline us. When we, friends, and family sin He knows it discourages us, others, and even injures our walk of faith. Sins that harm us open the door of grief, not only for us, but for our Creator.
How do we keep this from happening? We make a choice, a commitment, a promise to God that we will do our best to lead a disciplined life depending on the power of the Holy Spirit, seeking God’s face, praying earnestly, and remaining in His presence at all times. Simply by changing our playgrounds, what we are used to in life. Therefore, we confess, repent of our sin; which means changing of the mind and behavior that we may conform to God’s Word. When we ask the Holy Spirit to lead and direct us on a daily basis, we gain His help by surrendering all. He gives us the ability to live and enjoy a successful Christian life through faith. He transforms, yet gives us a strong foundation representing the cornerstone of our faith, Jesus Christ, the head of the church.
Now I must ask this Question? Have you put on the “New Man?” Are you living a righteous and holy life representing the One True Living God? If you aren’t, I pray that today be your day, a day of revelation of what God has to give you, the love He desires to share with you, and the blessings He wants to shower upon you. Furthermore, if you haven’t, I will be praying for you. I promise by God that it will be the greatest decision/choice you will ever make in you life because all good things come from the one who created you, the Alpha and the Omega, the One True Living God. His grace is sufficient for all, won’t you come serve our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ?
Father God, I thank you for your Son Jesus Christ who shed His blood on the cross for all our sins giving us the opportunity of LIFE ETERNAL in heaven with you. I come before you humbly with a repentant heart asking for your forgiveness, your mercy, and your grace. I thank you for I am grateful of what you have given me. Father, I hope and I pray that the words you have given me this day will bring strength, wisdom, encouragement, and revelation to all who drink from it. Lord I pray that you cause many blessing to rain down on all of them and their families. Show them great and mighty things, put them in awe. I thank you Father, as I thank every one else who supports, encourages, and believes in what I do for you glory, honor, and praise. Have a wonderful day:) I pray in the name of your wonderful Son Jesus Christ, Amen!
