Abraham was, humanly speaking, the founder of our Jewish nation. What were his experiences concerning this question of being saved by faith? Was it because of his good deeds that God accepted him? If so, he would have had something to boast about. But from God’s point of view Abraham had no basis at all for pride. For the Scriptures tell us, “Abraham believed God , so God delared him to be righteous.” Romans 4:1-3.
In Romans 4:1-3 Paul showed how Abraham was accepted by God and declared righteous because of his faith. As we look at Abraham in the book of Genesis, we find a man who was set apart for God. Despite his mistakes, he could be considered a person who had it all together. But Abraham had to come to God the same way we do, through faith. He did nothing to deserve the special promises of forgiveness and recovery that God offers us. No social status or good deed can make us deserving of God’s gracious forgiveness; yet no failure is too great an obstacle for God’s restoring power. When we entrust our life to God and believe that he can help us, God gives us the power and courage to move forward one step at a time.
